Professor of general and African languages at the University of Oslo, Norway. Has been working with African languages since the late 1970s, with special emphasis on Nizaa (Bantoid; Cameroon), Fulfulde (Atlantic; West Africa), Subiya (Bantu; Namibia & Botswana), and Omotic languages (Ethiopia and South Sudan). Has also been working on inter alia Saami (Uralic; Scandinavia & Russia), Chinese (Sinotibetan; China), Khowar (Dardic; Pakistan), and Algonquian languages (North America). Theoretical orientation: Cognitive Linguistics, Evolutionary Linguistics. Main areas of interest and research: Phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, origin and evolution of language.
